Every day, the sidewalk in front of the Cox’s Bazar District Education Office transforms into a lively marketplace, where small vegetable sellers line up with their baskets. Among the assortment of fresh produce, one item especially draws attention—shapla, the native water lily plant, which has recently become a favorite in local home cooking.

Vendors say the number of customers buying shapla has noticeably increased. The appeal lies in its unique taste and versatility. It can be prepared in multiple ways—cooked with prawns in a light curry, stir-fried, or used as a regular vegetable. Many who have tried it say, “Water lily curry is remarkably delicious.”

Despite its taste, the price remains low, with each bundle selling for just Tk 30. Its affordability attracts not only residents but also curious tourists exploring the area.

Locals add that the easy availability and low price of shapla have made this small sidewalk market even more vibrant and lively.
