The Bangladesh Coast Guard has wrapped up a weeklong series of initiatives to improve the quality of life and environmental conditions on St. Martin’s Island in Teknaf. The program, which focused on awareness-building, disaster preparedness, free medical services, and relief distribution, concluded on Saturday morning with a humanitarian event.

Held at the Coast Guard Station on St. Martin’s Island, the closing ceremony featured Captain Shaheen Majid, Zonal Commander of the Coast Guard East Zone, as the chief guest. He distributed food relief—including rice, lentils, oil, salt, and potatoes—to over 150 underprivileged island residents.

The program, which began on May 11, included a fire safety drill, training on disaster preparedness and post-disaster response, tree plantation for environmental sustainability, awareness campaigns on drug abuse, life skills training, and the provision of free medical check-ups and medicines.

Captain Majid emphasized that besides safeguarding the country’s vast maritime, coastal, and riverine territories, the Coast Guard is committed to uplifting local communities through service, skill development, and support programs.

“These efforts reflect our continued dedication to both security and humanitarian responsibilities,” he said.
