Cox’s Bazar held a cleanliness campaign featuring a rally, discussion meeting, dustbin distribution, and quiz competition on Saturday to raise public awareness about keeping the tourist city clean and pollution-free.
The programme, organised by Cox’s Bazar Municipality and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was held in the Kalatoli area under the slogan ‘We will keep our city clean’.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan inaugurated the Clean Drive Piloting Programme, part of an ongoing city cleanliness initiative.
A rally began in front of Hotel Simon in the Kalatoli hotel-motel zone, with elected representatives, government officials, JICA representatives, local community committee members and students taking part.
A discussion meeting on cleanliness was later held at the Kalatoli Boro Mosque madrasa grounds.
Attendees included municipal administrator Shamim Al Imran, JICA team leader Mr Rimon Gorsiagu, deputy team leader Abdur Rouf, municipal executive engineer Parakram Chakma, social development officer Shamim Akhtar, and local community committee president Nurul Islam.
Addressing the inauguration, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan stressed the importance of keeping household surroundings clean to prevent dengue. He said cleanliness drives were being conducted in different parts of Cox’s Bazar every Saturday.
He added that special initiatives were underway to keep the tourist city clean and called on residents to work alongside the administration.
Municipal administrator Shamim Al Imran said special cleanliness drives were being organised every Saturday to raise public awareness.
He said the activities were gradually being expanded to all municipal wards, adding that the municipality wanted domestic and foreign tourists to experience a clean city.
As part of the programme, students took part in a cleanliness-themed quiz competition, followed by a prize-giving ceremony.
Dustbins were also distributed at different locations, while a pond beside Kalatoli Government Primary School was cleaned under the campaign.
Organisers said the initiative aimed not only to conduct cleaning operations but also to bring changes in residents’ habits and behaviour to establish Cox’s Bazar as a clean tourist city.
