The crescent moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan was sighted in the sky over Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday evening, paving the way for fasting to begin on Thursday.
The moon was first spotted at 6:25pm at Laboni Point on the beach.
The district moon-sighting committee members first observed the crescent with their mobile phones and a high-resolution camera, then confirmed the sighting with their open eyes.
Deputy director of Islamic Foundation Bangladesh in Cox’s Bazar and member secretary of the district moon-sighting committee, agriculturist Dr Mohammad Abu Talha, said that the meeting began at 6:00pm at Laboni Point, where the sighting was formally confirmed.
Meanwhile, the pesh imam of the Cox’s Bazar Model Mosque and president of the district Imam Parishad, Mufti Solaiman Qasemi, announced, “Alhamdulillah, the moon has been sighted in the sky over Cox’s Bazar. The holy month of Ramadan will begin tomorrow.”
He also said that Tarawih prayers would be held at 8:15pm on Wednesday night.
