The coastal town of Cox’s Bazar was left waterlogged after persistent rainfall throughout Sunday, disrupting normal life as heavy and moderate showers continued from early morning until night.
Water accumulated on roads across different parts of the town, causing waterlogging and inconvenience for office-goers, students, businesspeople and pedestrians.
According to the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, 101 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the district in the 24 hours until Sunday evening. The weather office forecast that rainfall may continue over the coming days.
Assistant Meteorologist Abdul Hannan said rain that began before dawn continued throughout the day, with 101mm recorded during the past 24 hours.
He said further rainfall was likely under the influence of a monsoon depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the well-marked low over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining North Odisha-West Bengal coast intensified into a monsoon depression at around 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Under its influence, squally weather may affect the northern Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh’s coastal areas and seaports.
The weather office has advised the seaports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to continue displaying Local Cautionary Signal No. 3.
Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay have also been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
Meanwhile, prolonged rainfall has caused waterlogging in several parts of Cox’s Bazar town, disrupting daily activities. Residents fear that continued rain could worsen flooding in low-lying areas over the coming days.
