Around 60,000 residents of 17 neighborhoods in Ward 1 of Cox’s Bazar Municipality held a rally and demonstration on Tuesday (January 7) to demand the cancellation of eviction notices and the establishment of permanent housing rights.
During their demonstration, they submitted a memorandum to the Chief Adviser of the interim government.
The program took place in front of the Cox’s Bazar District Commissioner’s office from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, drawing around 20,000 participants. The protest disrupted traffic on the town’s main roads, extending from Laldighi Par to Jhautola, causing significant public inconvenience.
Speakers at the event voiced their determination to protect their homes, with one stating they have survived storms and the sea and will give their lives if necessary to save the land and houses.
They threatened to take further action if the Civil Aviation Authority did not revoke the settlement.
Former Ward 1 Councillor Akhtar Kamal and other local leaders handed the memorandum to the District Commissioner, Mohammad Salahuddin. The commissioner assured the attendees that he would forward the memorandum to the government for review by relevant departments.
