Tremors were felt across several parts of Bangladesh, including Cox’s Bazar, at around 10:51 pm on Wednesday (25 February), triggering brief panic among residents.

According to an initial report from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Sagaing region of neighbouring Myanmar, with its impact felt in parts of Bangladesh.

Residents in different areas of Cox’s Bazar town said houses and buildings shook for several seconds. Many people rushed out of their homes and gathered in open spaces as a precaution.

A resident of the Panabazar Road area said that amid the night’s quiet, the sudden tremor initially left many confused before they realised it was an earthquake.

No immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received.

Authorities said the situation was being monitored.
