A major fire broke out at an LPG refuelling station in the Kalatoli area of Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday (25 February), sending shockwaves through the coastal town.
Although the blaze reportedly began in the afternoon, it intensified dramatically around 10:20 pm, according to witnesses.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the station premises before flames rapidly engulfed the entire facility.
The presence of stored LPG cylinders fuelled the fire, causing it to spread quickly and heightening fears of explosions. Panic gripped nearby residents, who evacuated their homes and moved to safer locations.
The intense heat and the spread of gas reportedly gutted at least several houses in the adjacent Adarshagram area. It was not immediately possible to determine the extent of the damage.
Officer-in-Charge Sami Uddin of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station confirmed the incident, stating that police rushed to the scene upon receiving reports of the fire. Law enforcers cordoned off the area and were working to maintain order.
Five units of the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence were deployed to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters continued efforts to prevent the flames from spreading further, assisted by local residents.
The incident has sparked widespread concern across the town. Authorities have urged the public not to gather near the site for safety reasons.
Officials said the exact cause of the fire would be determined following an investigation. Once the situation is fully under control, officials will release detailed information regarding damage and any casualties.
