A major fire broke out at the Matarbari Power Plant in Moheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Monday night. The incident occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. on January 12 within the power plant premises.

After receiving the report, Ram Prasad Sen, the Officer-in-Charge of the Maheshkhali Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, rushed to the scene and initiated firefighting operations.

According to the latest update, they have brought the fire under preliminary control.

He further stated that the power plant’s waste dumping area, which stored by-products generated from coal storage, was the origin of the fire.

According to local journalist Kabya Sourav, residents first noticed flames inside the power plant from a nearby bridge. They immediately informed the fire service, prompting a swift response.

Confirming the incident, Moheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Imran Mahmud Dalim said the fire broke out in the scrap yard inside the power plant, though the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The Matarbari Power Plant is a 1,200-megawatt coal-fired power facility, one of the country’s key energy projects.

The extent of damage caused by the fire could not be determined immediately.
