The Cox’s Bazar Fishery Ghat has become increasingly busy as fishing trawlers return from the deep sea with abundant catches, marking the peak of the marine fishing season.
From early morning, the landing centre comes alive with the arrival of fish-laden trawlers. Wholesalers, commission agents, retailers and labourers crowd the jetty, competing to secure the best catch as baskets of freshly landed fish are unloaded one after another.
A visit to the landing centre found buyers gathering as soon as news spread that trawlers had arrived from the deep sea. Bidding began immediately after the fish were unloaded, while labourers hurriedly carried baskets to nearby wholesale auction houses, creating a scene of intense commercial activity.
Fisherman Halim Ullah said calm weather over the past few days had allowed trawlers to operate safely in deep waters.
‘As a result, trawlers have been returning every day with good catches of various marine fish,’ he said.
With the fishing season now at its peak, supplies of pomfret, loitta (Bombay duck), coral grouper, hilsa and several other marine fish have increased significantly.
Traders said the fish not only meet local demand in Cox’s Bazar but are also transported to markets across the country.
Fish traders said the busy trading activity was expected to continue over the coming weeks if favourable weather conditions persisted.
They added that stable weather would help fishermen secure better prices while enabling consumers in different parts of the country to buy fresh marine fish at comparatively lower prices.
