To protect the salt industry and ensure fair pricing, a memorandum demanding a halt to the excessive import of industrial salt from China and the illegal influx of salt from India has been submitted to the Advisor of the Ministry of Industries.

On Monday, April 28, a five-member delegation led by Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuzullah Farid, a BNP National Executive Committee member and former lawmaker of Cox’s Bazar-2 (Maheshkhali-Kutubdia), met with Md. Obaidur Rahman, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, at his office in Dhaka.

The delegation held an extended discussion with the Secretary on various challenges faced by the salt industry, particularly the issues of over-import and cross-border smuggling, which have caused local producers to suffer. Following the meeting, they formally handed over a memorandum outlining their demands, primarily focusing on securing fair prices for locally produced salt.

In response, Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman assured the delegation that the Ministry of Industries, in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, would convene a joint meeting to address this pressing national concern. He expressed optimism that concrete steps would be taken soon to protect grassroots salt farmers and stabilize the market.
