Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir on Saturday said that the government was continuing bilateral engagement with Myanmar and multilateral discussions involving China and other countries to ensure the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh.

He made the remarks during a press briefing following the inauguration of a three-day academy programme organised by the South Asian Academy for International Leadership at a hotel in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday afternoon.

Humayun Kabir said the government had maintained its diplomatic efforts to find a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis.

‘Our objective is to ensure the voluntary, safe and dignified return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar with the support of the international community,’ he said.

Referring to Prime Minister Tarek Rahman’s recent visit to China, he said the Bangladesh government was positively considering the economic corridor proposal presented by the Chinese president.

He said discussions were underway on various aspects of a proposed economic corridor linking Cox’s Bazar with Myanmar and extending to China.

However, he stressed that the government would not take any decision contrary to Bangladesh’s national interests.

‘All decisions will be taken with the highest priority given to the country’s sovereignty and economic interests,’ he said.

The briefing was told that the three-day international academy programme brought together JCI members, young leaders, international delegates and distinguished guests from Bangladesh and several other South Asian countries.
