A depression over the Bay of Bengal has made the sea rough, causing tides to surge two to three feet higher than usual. As a result, at least 20 villages along the Cox’s Bazar coast have been inundated. The situation is particularly severe in Saint Martin’s Island and Kutubdia.
Tidal water caused by the depression has damaged many homes in Saint Martin’s. With no embankment protection, floodwaters have also submerged at least 15 areas across Kutubdia, Maheshkhali, Pekua, and Teknaf upazilas—affecting over 20 villages.
Meanwhile, in Kutubdia’s Ali Akbar Deil Union, a 50-meter section of an embankment near the Bay of Bengal wind power project, south of Kobi Jasim Uddin High School, has been washed away.
According to Md. Abdul Hannan, Assistant Meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, Cox’s Bazar recorded 131 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours as of 9 a.m. Friday. The weather is expected to remain similar until Saturday (31 May).
