A large hilsa fish weighing approximately 2.5 kilograms was sold for Tk 4,000 on Saint Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar on Monday afternoon. A fishing crew netted the prized catch aboard a small trawler owned by Mohammad Alam, a local fisherman.
Md Azim, President of the Saint Martin Fishing Trawler Owners’ Association, confirmed the news. He stated that five crew members aboard the trawler, owned by Mohammad Alam, son of Sultan Ahmed from Dakshinpara, cast their nets early Monday morning in the “Atbain” area, located west of the island. Around noon, while pulling in the net, they caught the large hilsa along with several others.
Mohammad Delwar Hossain, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer, noted that such catches are a result of strict adherence to the government-imposed fishing ban periods.
“Thanks to proper enforcement of fishing restrictions, a variety of fish species are now appearing in nets, bringing new hope to local fishers,” he said.
