Severe heat has caused widespread discomfort across Cox’s Bazar, disrupting daily life and significantly reducing tourist arrivals at the country’s popular seaside destination.

A visit to the beach areas of Kolatoli Beach, Sugandha Beach, and Laboni Point on Thursday showed a much lower number of visitors compared with usual days.

Due to the unbearable heat, many people avoided outdoor activity, leaving the beach areas relatively quiet.

Local businesspeople said the intensity of the heat had increased over the past several days, affecting tourist arrivals and business activities. They reported that the scorching weather left the beach areas nearly deserted during the afternoon.

Assistant meteorologist Abdul Hannan of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department office in Cox’s Bazar said the ongoing heatwave could continue for another three days.

However, he added that there was a possibility of rain in four days, which might bring some relief.

Meanwhile, senior lifeguard Mohammad Osman said the sea remained safe for bathing despite the intense heat.

He said red and yellow safety flags had been placed along the beach, and many visitors were entering the sea to get relief from the heat. He also mentioned that lifeguards were tirelessly working to ensure the safety of tourists.

The ongoing heatwave has increased suffering among both residents and tourists in Cox’s Bazar, while officials fear the situation may worsen if rainfall does not occur soon.

Doctors have advised people to remain cautious during the extreme weather by drinking plenty of water and using umbrellas if going outdoors becomes necessary.
