Intermittent rainfall has been lashing parts of the country for the past three days, with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasting the wet spell to continue until July 9.
Meteorologists predict that three low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal throughout July, although the likelihood of these systems intensifying into cyclones remains very low. However, as a precautionary measure, authorities have requested that the country’s four maritime ports maintain Local Cautionary Signal No. 3.
Meanwhile, continuous rainfall and water flowing down from the hills have inundated low-lying areas of Cox’s Bazar, leaving many residents stranded in both urban and rural parts of the district. Floodwaters have submerged major and minor roads, disrupting vehicular movement across the region.
In particular, several villages in Ukhiya upazila have been flooded, causing extensive damage to vegetable fields, betel leaf plantations, and rural roads. Local representatives have reported that rising water levels in low-lying areas are severely affecting daily life.
Mohammad Kawsar Hossain, Upazila Project Implementation Officer, said that union parishad chairmen have been instructed to prepare lists of affected families for emergency response and assistance.
Separately, the weather office has issued another forecast indicating that the active southwest monsoon may bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Chattogram, Khulna, and Barishal divisions within the next 24 hours (from 10 AM today). Additionally, there is a risk of landslides in the hilly areas of the Chattogram division due to persistent heavy rains.
