Favourable conditions have developed for the advance of the south-west monsoon across Bangladesh, with the seasonal weather system expected to reach the Cox’s Bazar coast within the next 48 hours, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The development is likely to increase rainfall across Cox’s Bazar and other parts of the Chattogram Division in the coming days, bringing relief from the prevailing heatwave.

Meteorologist A.K.M. Nazmul Haque of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued the forecast on Saturday.

According to the BMD, many areas of the Chattogram Division may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds within the next 24 hours. Isolated areas could also receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Meteorologists said monsoon activity has already started intensifying over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal regions. If the monsoon advances across the Cox’s Bazar coast within the next two days, the district may begin experiencing the more regular rainfall typically associated with the rainy season.

The weather office said that during the 24-hour period beginning Sunday morning, many places in the Chattogram Division, including Cox’s Bazar, could continue to experience gusty winds, thunderstorms, and rainfall. Moderate to heavy rain is also likely in different parts of the country, while both daytime and nighttime temperatures may fall slightly.

On Monday, scattered rain or thundershowers are expected in parts of the Chattogram Division, including Cox’s Bazar, with the possibility of moderately heavy rainfall in some areas. Daytime temperatures in eastern districts may decrease further.

The forecast also indicates that rainfall activity will persist across the country through Tuesday and Wednesday. The Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions are expected to receive the heaviest rainfall, while coastal districts, including Cox’s Bazar, may continue to experience gusty winds and thunderstorms.

Residents of Cox’s Bazar hope the anticipated rainfall will bring some relief after enduring intense heat over the past week. Tourism-related businesses also believe that the arrival of regular monsoon showers will help lower temperatures and restore the freshness typically associated with the rainy season.

The meteorological department further said that the tendency for rainfall may continue beyond the next five days, making the monsoon’s influence more pronounced across the south-eastern region of the country, including the Cox’s Bazar coast.
