The rural landscape of Pekua upazila in Cox’s Bazar has taken on a fresh charm during the monsoon, with lush paddy fields, winding village roads and the tranquil Matamuhuri River drawing nature lovers seeking a peaceful escape from urban life.
Rows of coconut and areca nut trees, canals, wetlands and open farmland have combined to create a picturesque countryside that becomes even more vibrant during the rainy season.
In the soft light of morning and late afternoon, visitors can be seen strolling along village paths, enjoying sweeping views of green fields, calm river waters and small country boats, while farmers remain busy tending their crops. The calls of birds and the serene surroundings offer a refreshing contrast to the bustle of city life.
‘The monsoon gives Pekua an entirely new look,’ said local resident Jalil Ahmed. ‘People from nearby areas visit regularly to enjoy the greenery, the river and the rural atmosphere.’
Another resident said Pekua had largely remained free from unplanned urbanisation, allowing visitors to experience the authentic beauty of the Bangladeshi countryside.
‘The scenery along the Matamuhuri River is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. It is one of the most beautiful times of the day,’ he said.
Besides its natural beauty, Pekua is known for its agriculture-based way of life, local traditions and the hospitality of its residents.
Locals believe that with improved infrastructure and carefully planned tourism initiatives, Pekua could emerge as a popular rural tourism destination for both domestic and international tourists.
