Favorable weather conditions have raised hopes for a bumper salt harvest in Teknaf this season. However, despite the increase in production, local farmers are disappointed due to low market prices.
Farmers say that the current price of salt is too low to cover even half of their production costs. Many fear falling into debt and have already approached the authorities to ensure fair pricing for their produce.
According to Md. Mizanur Rahman, the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) officer overseeing Teknaf, said salt cultivation is being carried out on 720 hectares of land this season. The production target has been set at 170,000 metric tons, but he believes the actual output may exceed expectations due to favorable weather conditions.
