Ramu Upazila Players’ Association ended a 22-year wait to win the Cox’s Bazar District Players’ Association Gold Cup Football Tournament, defeating strong contenders Chakaria 3-1 on penalties in the final on Tuesday.
The final was held at Birshreshtha Ruhul Amin Stadium in Cox’s Bazar in the afternoon. The match ended goalless in regulation time before Ramu secured the title in the penalty shootout.
Ramu goalkeeper Shamim delivered an outstanding performance and was named man of the match, as well as the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
Ramu’s Emon Barua was named the best player, while Zahed received the award for the tournament’s top scorer.
Ramu players and supporters celebrated enthusiastically after the victory.
Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner Md A Mannan attended the final and prize-giving ceremony as chief guest.
Police superintendent ANM Shajadur Rahman and officials of the district sports association and players’ association were also present.
