A 34-year-old Rohingya man was rescued unharmed within two hours of being abducted from a refugee camp in Teknaf on Sunday night, police said.
The man, identified as Syed Amin, was rescued by members of the 16 Armed Police Battalion (APBn) after an operation in a hilly area of Camp 27 in Hnila union.
The abductors allegedly released him and fled into the hills after sensing the presence of police.
Syed Amin was abducted at around 9:30pm on Sunday from in front of Abdul Amin’s tea stall in Block B/4 of Jadimura Rohingya Camp 27.
He is the son of Ibn Amin and a resident of Camp 27.
According to 16 APBn, Syed Amin was standing in front of the tea stall when an unidentified armed group of 10 to 12 people forcibly abducted him and took him to a hilly area near the barbed-wire fence of Block B/13.
After receiving the information, a team from the APBn police camp in Jadimura quickly went to the area and began an operation in the hills.
The abductors fled deeper into the hills after noticing the presence of the law enforcement team, leaving Syed Amin behind, police said.
APBn members later rescued him from the hilly area and handed him over to his family at around 11:40pm after necessary questioning.
The identities of those involved in the abduction have yet to be established.
Police said an operation is underway to identify and arrest those responsible.
The incident was confirmed by 16 APBn Commander Additional DIG Kawsar Sikder.
