In rural Bangladesh, buffalo rearing remains a common sight. A traditional method of controlling these strong animals involves piercing the nose and inserting a ring—known as a bull nose ring—through which a rope or chain can be attached.
Since the nose is highly sensitive, farmers can easily guide and control buffalo with minimal force.
In Cox’s Bazar, many farming communities still rely on this age-old practice.
A farmer from Ukhiya explained that while buffalo are mighty, large-bodied, and often restless, it is difficult to manage them simply by ropes around their necks or backs. The nose rope offers a practical solution.
He further noted that the method proves particularly effective during plowing or field work.
Young buffalo are also trained with a nose rope as they grow, helping them adapt to human commands and agricultural tasks.
