Bangladesh’s only coral island, Saint Martin’s, has once again returned to its natural splendour. With the onset of winter, a lush green carpet of Sagarlata has spread across the island, making it look more vibrant and enchanting than ever.
As dawn breaks over the sandy shores, the first rays of sunlight gently trigger the blooming of Sagarlata flowers—tiny white and pale purple blossoms that appear briefly but leave a soft, soothing impression. Their delicate colour and fragrance brighten the island each morning, captivating locals and tourists alike.
But Sagarlata’s contribution is more than just beauty. The plant plays a crucial role in coastal protection, helping form dunes that shield the shoreline from wind and wave erosion. Resident Azizul Haque notes that recently, the increased spread of Sagarlata has strengthened several stretches of the beach.
For a fragile ecosystem like Saint Martin’s, Sagarlata acts as both a natural ornament and a natural defence.
