Following a recent rise in salt prices, salt farmers in Teknaf have resumed production with renewed motivation. After a long period of low prices that discouraged production, the cost per maund has increased by Tk 100—bringing fresh hope to the struggling farmers.
Several local farmers shared that previous rates often failed to cover production costs, forcing them to incur losses. Welcoming the price hike, they urged the government to ensure stability in the market to keep salt farming sustainable.
Md Mizanur Rahman, the Upazila BSCIC (Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation) ‘s acting officer, said that while light rain poses minimal disruption, heavy rainfall could halt production altogether. This season, salt is cultivated on 7,600 acres in the upazila, with a production target of approximately 150,000 metric tons.
