Salt farmers in Cox’s Bazar lease land at high costs and toil under intense sun, breathing in the salty air, searching for a better livelihood. This season began with a significant boost: the government has decided to halt salt imports.
Farmers have returned to the fields at the start of the season, encouraged by fair prices. All the land now uses modern polythene technology, yielding salt at two-and-a-half times the rate of traditional methods. Polythene methods also produce salt of superior quality.
Farmers report that with the halt in imports, they receive better salt prices. This fair return motivates them to increase both the cultivation area and production.
