A seminar titled ‘Safe Drinking Water Management in Cox’s Bazar District’ was held, organized by the Cox’s Bazar Development Authority.
The seminar took place on Wednesday morning at the authority’s conference hall in Cox’s Bazar. The keynote speaker was Ainul Huda, UNICEF’s water focal point.
Speakers at the event said that the availability of safe drinking water in Cox’s Bazar is declining steadily, stressing the need for urgent measures.
They identified excessive groundwater extraction, increasing salinity, climate change, rapid urbanization, population growth, and the filling of natural water bodies as key factors behind the crisis.
The seminar also discussed possible solutions, including reducing water wastage and adopting sustainable plans to protect safe drinking water sources.
The session was chaired by Mohammad Salahuddin, chairman of the Cox’s Bazar Development Authority. Among others, speakers included Mohammad Nasrullah, executive engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering, Dr Rupash Pal, associate professor of community medicine at Cox’s Bazar Medical College, and Akhtar Hossain, executive engineer of the authority.
Officials from various government departments, along with teachers and students from different schools, attended the seminar. The session concluded with experts responding to students’ questions about the issues discussed.
