Renowned regional singer Bulbul Akhtar is set to receive the “Independence Memorial Award 2026” from Chattogram City Corporation in recognition of her outstanding contribution to promoting the songs and cultural heritage of Chattogram at home and abroad.
Born in 1963 in Matarbari, Moheshkhali, in Cox’s Bazar district, the accomplished artist has had a distinguished musical career spanning over four decades. Her late husband, Rashid Kawwal, was also a noted singer from Chattogram.
Throughout her career, Bulbul Akhtar has recorded around 1,200 songs written and composed by the popular lyricist and composer Ahmad Bashir, released across 88 volumes.
A mother of two daughters, she continues to captivate audiences with her unique voice and singing style.
The award will be presented on the final day of the ongoing Independence Book Fair in Chattogram, recognising her remarkable role in preserving and promoting the regional culture.
Expressing her reaction, Bulbul Akhtar said the recognition is a matter of pride and added that she is currently unwell and seeking support for her treatment.
Meanwhile, the music band Aunla congratulated her on receiving the award. In a statement, the band said Bulbul Akhtar has dedicated more than 56 years to promoting Chattogram’s music and is widely known as the “Bulbul of songs” among millions of listeners.
The statement added that her songs continue to motivate people of all ages and reflect the rich cultural heritage of Chattogram, making this recognition not only a personal achievement but also a significant cultural milestone for the broader Chattogram region.
The band also thanked all those involved in conferring the award.
