Six establishments in Pekua were fined a total of Tk29,000 for producing food in unhygienic conditions, selling underweight products, using faulty measuring equipment, and selling expired goods.

A mobile court conducted the drive on Monday afternoon at Alhaj Kabir Ahmed Chowdhury Bazar, the fish market and Pekua Choumuhani.

The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Cox’s Bazar, conducted the operation, led by Pekua Upazila Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Anisul Islam.

During the drive, officials inspected the conditions in which food products were produced and sold, checked product weights and measurements, verified the accuracy of weighing equipment, and examined expiry dates.

Officials fined six establishments separately for various irregularities, with the total penalty amounting to Tk 29,000.

Dubai Bakery in Pekua Bazar was fined under Sections 24(a) and 41 of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution Act, 2018.

Flower Kali Abhijat Mishti Biponi, Ismail Fishing, Rahim Fishing, Kalu’s Fish Shop and Bhai Bhai Traders in Pekua Choumuhani were fined under relevant provisions of the Weights and Measures Standards Act and the BSTI Act, 2018.

During the operation, traders were instructed to maintain hygiene in food production and sales, ensure accurate weights and measurements, and comply with prescribed product standards.

BSTI officials said such drives would continue to protect public health, ensure product quality and safeguard consumers’ rights.

BSTI Cox’s Bazar Field Officer (CM) Nair Ausaf Rahman, Inspector (Metrology) M Ruhul Islam, local traders’ association leaders, and business representatives were present during the drive.
