The traditional cultivation of sweet betel leaf (known locally as misti pan) has long been a lifeline for tens of thousands of families across seven upazilas of Cox’s Bazar. This season, record-high prices have brought smiles to the faces of farmers, who now hope that boosting exports could further expand production.
Currently, at least 20,000 farming families are enjoying the benefits of strong market demand, with sweet betel leaves fetching their highest prices in recent memory. Retail markets are seeing betel leaves sell for up to Tk 750 per bira (bundle), a price that has left growers very satisfied.
According to data from the local agricultural office, sweet betel leaf cultivation covers approximately 3,500 hectares across the district. However, a similar amount is reportedly grown in hilly areas, which are not accounted for in official figures. Maheshkhali leads the way in production, with 1,400 hectares under cultivation.
Meanwhile, a surge in demand from the Middle East has driven increased exports, further boosting domestic demand. With efforts underway to expand international markets, the price of sweet betel leaf has reached record levels, further encouraging farmers to invest in and develop their cultivation.
