An 18-year-old boy died after being swept away by a strong current while bathing in the Reju Canal along the Marine Drive road in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar, on Friday.
The incident occurred around 12:30 pm.
The deceased, Mehedi Hasan, was the son of Anju Mia of Bit Office area in Ward No. 2 of Jaliapalong union in Ukhia.
Locals said Mehedi went to the Reju canal to bathe around noon when he was swept away by the strong current. Local fishermen later rescued him at around 1:30 pm and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
The body was later taken to his home.
Ukhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Majumder said he had learnt about the death of a teenager while bathing in the Reju canal.
“No complaint has been received from the family so far. Legal action will be taken if any complaint is filed,” he said.
