A temporary pet market sets up every Friday on the pavement in front of the Cox’s Bazar Municipality, drawing crowds of buyers and curious visitors alike.

The market begins to gather momentum shortly after Friday prayers, gradually turning the area into a lively hub as the afternoon progresses. By late afternoon, the area is filled with traders and customers.

A variety of pigeons, rabbits, chickens, parrots, and other ornamental birds are put up for sale at the makeshift stalls. Vendors also bring a variety of local and foreign animal and bird breeds. While many people visit for personal interest and to purchase pets, others come with family members simply to browse and enjoy the atmosphere.

Traders said sales are particularly strong on Fridays due to the weekly holiday and the larger turnout of people after prayers. Compared to other days of the week, business reportedly increases by several fold.

Buyer Sourav Azad said the convenience of finding a wide range of animals and birds in one place makes the market attractive. It has become especially popular among children and teenagers, he added.

However, pedestrians noted that setting up the market on the pavement occasionally causes temporary traffic congestion. Residents have called for better supervision and designated arrangements from the authorities to ensure more orderly management.

Over time, the Friday pet market has become a familiar weekly attraction in Cox’s Bazar town.
