Cox’s Bazar Fishery Ghat awakens well before dawn. Throughout the night, fishermen are busy at sea, and as morning breaks, the fresh catches start arriving at the harbor.
Trading goes on here from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the largest supply of fish available early in the morning.
Each fish changes hands twice within the market. First, local wholesale buyers purchase the fish directly from the fishermen’s boats and then arrange them in market displays.
These wholesalers then sell to traders nationwide, transporting the fish to various destinations. Seasonal fluctuations in fish prices often lead to sales by the bunch, hundred, thousand, or by weight, measured in maunds and palla (traditional weight units).
The market sees transactions totaling nearly Tk1.5 crore to 2 crore daily.
