A government gazette has officially been published declaring Pekua a municipality, fulfilling an election pledge made by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.
The information was confirmed through a notification issued by the Ministry of Local Government on Wednesday.
During the election campaign, Salahuddin Ahmed had promised to upgrade Pekua into a municipality. After assuming ministerial responsibilities, steps were taken to implement that commitment.
Earlier, the Pekua upazila administration had sent two draft proposals to the district administration after finalising the proposed municipal boundaries.
Sources said Salahuddin Ahmed had previously played a key role in upgrading Pekua into an upazila in 2002 while serving as state minister for communications.
Recently, the Chakaria upazila administration also submitted a survey report proposing the formation of a new upazila named Matamuhuri, another commitment reportedly made by the minister during the election.
Local residents said the declaration of Pekua as a municipality had long been a demand of the area’s residents.
They expressed optimism that the move would contribute to planned urban development and improved civic services.
