Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, said that the number of tigers at Sundarbans is now 125, according to the 2023-24 survey of the national animal of the Sundarbans.

The density of tigers is 2.64 per 100 square kilometers. Compared to 2018, the number of tigers has increased by 11 in 2024, with a growth rate of 9.65%, and it has increased by 17.92% compared to 2015.

She also that there were 106 tigers in the Sundarbans in 2015, with a density of 2.17. In 2018, the number of tigers increased to 114, with a density of 2.55. The tiger population grew by 8 in 2018, with a growth rate of about 8%.

She further added that in the 2023-24 survey, pictures of 21 tiger cubs were captured, but their number was not included as cubs have a high mortality rate at a young age. In contrast, only 5 cubs were photographed in both 2015 and 2018.

She also said that the number of tigers is determined by analyzing the survey data and images. 

The survey began in January 2023 and concluded in March 2024. 

Rizwana Hasan expressed that the increase in tiger numbers is joyous news for the entire country. 

She emphasized the need for public cooperation alongside government efforts to conserve the tigers.
