The fisheries department in Kutubdia seized 30 behundi fishing nets during an operation in the Kutubdia Channel, Cox’s Bazar, to protect mother hilsa and ensure safe breeding and migration. The seized nets were later burned in public.
The operation was conducted on Friday, October 23, under the directives of Mohammad Anwar Hossain, director of the Department of Fisheries in Chattogram division, and Mohammad Nazmul Huda, Cox’s Bazar district fisheries officer.
Mohammad Anwarul Amin, fisheries officer in Kutubdia upazila, said the drive aimed to conserve fish resources, ensure the free movement and safe migration of mother hilsa, and create favourable conditions for the species to reproduce.
He said such operations could reduce the use of illegal fishing nets and boost hilsa reproduction and production. He added that the drives would continue.
