UNICEF Bangladesh profoundly mourns the tragic death of a child in a fire that broke out at a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.

In a statement, Rana Flowers, a representative of UNICEF,  expressed heartfelt condolences to the child’s family and loved ones.

Despite controlling the fire within a few hours, preliminary reports indicate that at least 400 shelters suffered destruction or partial damage. Among the affected structures, one main learning center and 17 community-based learning centers are believed to have been impacted or burned.

UNICEF has already begun assessing the full extent of the damage, and its top priority remains to ensure the protection and support of the affected children and their families, read the statement.

For over seven years, Rohingya refugee children have endured unimaginable hardships since their families were forcibly displaced from Myanmar. These children deserve unwavering support. UNICEF remains committed to addressing their basic needs and ensuring their safety and security.

“We will continue collaborating with local authorities, UN agencies, and other partners to support these vulnerable children and their families and ensure they have access to essential services and protection in this challenging time,” the statement added.
