Vegetable prices remain high in Cox’s Bazar, with several varieties selling at elevated prices at the city’s Boro Bazar, leaving many shoppers buying less than they need.

Most common vegetables are currently selling for Tk50–100 a kilogram in Cox’s Bazar’s retail markets, while some varieties are priced as high as Tk120–150 a kilogram.

Cucumbers are selling for Tk120 a kilogram, yardlong beans for Tk130, eggplants for Tk140, bitter gourds for Tk150, snake gourds for Tk80, papayas for Tk80, okra for Tk60–120 depending on quality, spiny gourds for Tk120 and green chillies for Tk175 a kilogram.

Tomatoes are selling for Tk120 a kilogram, potatoes for Tk50 and carrots for Tk120, according to recent market prices in Cox’s Bazar.

Vegetable trader Zahir Ullah said transport costs had increased following the recent rise in fuel prices in different parts of the country.

“Market prices are also changing daily depending on supply and demand. As a result, the prices of some vegetables have increased by Tk10–20 a kilogram,” he said.

Kader, a shopper at the market, said buying several types of vegetables at once was becoming increasingly expensive.

“Every vegetable seems expensive when I come to the market. I used to buy a kilogram of several types of vegetables, but now I have to buy smaller quantities to keep my spending down,” he said.

Consumers said regular market monitoring and a stable supply could help keep vegetable prices more affordable.
