Even before winter officially arrives, migratory birds seem to be heralding its approach along Cox’s Bazar’s scenic Marine Drive.

Lately, the area has become a haven for the White Wagtail — locally known as Khanjan Pakhi — a small, graceful bird with grey and white plumage.

These charming wagtails dart across the grassy patches and sandy stretches of the beach every morning and afternoon, seeking food.

Occasionally, they move in small flocks, fluttering together in the breeze, and at other times, they wander alone, hopping across the grass in search of insects.

Nature enthusiasts note that such migratory species often appear in Bangladesh’s southern coastal regions ahead of winter.

The White Wagtails travel thousands of kilometres from the colder zones of Europe, Central Asia, and northern India to the warmer climates of South Asia every year.

The open landscape of Marine Drive and the mild sea breeze provide a safe and welcoming habitat for these seasonal visitors.

Locals and tourists alike say the sight of the wagtails dancing near the waves or gliding above the fields adds a touch of serenity and beauty to the coastline.
