Large blocks of ice are loaded onto trawlers, one after another, and carefully stacked. In fact, the heaviest load on a trawler is often the ice itself. These blocks are designed to last up to 20 days without melting and stored in special compartments. But why do fishermen take so much ice out into the deep sea?
Fisherman Abdur Rahim explained that they often remain at sea for a week or more after catching fish. The ice is essential for preserving the catch during that time.
“Without the ice, the fish would spoil before we return to shore,” he said.
Each block of ice costs around Tk120 and is carefully stored in the trawler’s cold storage, where special measures are taken to minimize melting.
