At Cox’s Bazar beach, a red flag is often displayed, raising curiosity among the tourists about its meaning.
Omar Faruque, a senior lifeguard of the CIPRB Sea Safe Project, said told Cox’s Bazar Life that a red flag signifies danger.
“It is hoisted when there are hazardous conditions in the sea, such as strong currents, rough waves, riptides, or floating debris. The red flag also serves as a warning if there are any official alerts from meteorological offices about unsafe sea conditions,” he added.
Rabiul Islam Raju, another lifeguard, explains that two types of flags are used at Cox’s Bazar beach: red-yellow and red. The red-yellow flag indicates that the sea is safe for swimming.
The lifeguard service operates primarily at the Kalatali, Sugandha, and Laboni points, where three designated swimming areas have red-yellow flags to signal safe conditions for bathing.
