Witness Foundation has distributed emergency food assistance among 200 flood-affected families in Chakaria and the Matamuhuri river basin of Cox’s Bazar following the recent floods triggered by heavy rainfall and hill runoff.
The floods inundated several unions in the area, leaving many families stranded for days. Although floodwaters have receded, many households—particularly low-income families, day labourers and those affected by erosion along the Matamuhuri River—are still struggling to recover from their losses.
In response, the non-governmental organisation launched a self-funded relief initiative, providing five days’ worth of essential food supplies to 200 affected families.
The assistance reached residents in Peace Centre, Phultala, Saharbil, Batakhali and other erosion-prone communities along the Matamuhuri River, as well as nearby flood-hit areas.
The relief distribution programme was attended by Chakaria-Pekua field officer Riad Mahmud, Witness Foundation communications coordinator Ragib Hasan and members of the organisation’s Cox’s Bazar-Chakaria youth team.
Ragib Hasan said flood-affected people needed more than immediate food assistance.
“Alongside emergency relief, long-term initiatives are essential to help affected families recover and return to normal life. The Witness Foundation remains committed to standing beside disaster-affected communities in the future,” he said.
Earlier, the organisation organised a free medical camp that provided healthcare services to around 1,000 people affected by the floods.
