After a seven-month pause, the relocation process of Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char in Noakhali’s island upazila, Hatiya, has resumed. The 25th phase of relocation has seen the relocation of 505 new Rohingya refugees to Bhasan Char. They also sent back 393 Rohingya who had returned to the camps for visits, bringing the total to 898.
On Monday morning, October 28, Rohingya interested in moving to Bhasan Char gathered at a temporary transit point set up at Ukhiya College from various camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf. In the evening, they set out for Chittagong, with plans to reach Bhasan Char via a Navy-managed ship the next day.
Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (Joint Secretary) Mohammad Shamsud Douza Nayan confirmed it to Cox’s Bazar Life.
A field visit to the transit point around 8:00 PM showed over 20 buses and trucks prepared for the journey.
Sources at the camp-in-charge office indicated that 253 Rohingya from 27 families in Camps 15 and 16 have completed the necessary procedures for relocation.
On March 1, four Navy vessels—BNS Penguin, Dolphin, Tuna, and Timi—carried 1,242 Rohingya to Bhasan Char in the 24th phase of the relocation.
