Heavy rainfall and strong sea waves have once again caused erosion along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive Road. Tidal surges, several feet higher than normal, have battered the Marine Drive, resulting in erosion at four different points within a two-kilometer stretch of the Teknaf section.
Geo-tube bags, installed earlier to prevent erosion, are now punctured and are gradually being washed away. Additionally, residents have been cutting down trees that had collapsed during the tide, removing natural barriers.
In August 2024, a similar erosion event occurred in the same section due to high tides caused by the full moon.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tidal surge submerges sections of the Marine Drive. Geo-tube embankments have collapsed, affecting areas such as Mundar Deil, Baharchhara, and parts of Shilkhali in Teknaf.
