A giant Shaplapata fish weighing nearly 16 kilograms was brought ashore at the Cox’s Bazar Fishery Ghat, drawing crowds of curious onlookers and traders. The rare catch came from a fishing trawler that had just returned from the deep sea.
According to fishermen, the fish got caught in their net about 30 kilometers off the coast. “At first, we thought it was a big fish of some other kind,” one of the fishermen said. “But once we hauled it onto the trawler, we realized it was a rare Shaplapata fish.”
Local fish trader Nurul Amin said, “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Shaplapata this large. Usually, these fish weigh around 3 to 4 kilograms, but a 16-kilogram one is extremely rare.”
He added that the fish was priced between Tk 450 and Tk 500 per kilogram, bringing its total value to around Tk 7,200–8,000. The fish was reportedly sold even before it was fully unloaded from the trawler.
The unusual catch quickly turned into a spectacle at the ghat, with locals and visitors snapping photos and videos. Many remarked that such a rare sight adds excitement for tourists whenever a massive fish like this is caught in Cox’s Bazar.
