A severe storm, Cyclone Ditwah, is advancing north-northwestward and is now located over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, near the coast of Sri Lanka. This has prompted the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) to instruct all sea ports across Bangladesh to hoist Local Warning Signal No. 2.
In its forecast released Friday (28 November), the BMD stated that Ditwah — currently positioned at approximately 8.2° N, 81.1° E off the Sri Lankan coast — was around 1,955 km southwest of the Chattogram sea port, 1,900 km from Cox’s Bazar port, 1,845 km from Mongla port and 1,840 km from Payra port as of 6:00 am on Friday. The cyclone is expected to continue moving north-northwest.
Observations show sustained winds up to 62 km per hour near the storm’s centre, with gusts or squalls reaching as high as 88 km/h. The seas in the surrounding area are extremely rough, posing significant danger.
Given this situation, the BMD has directed the authorities at Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra ports to hoist Signal No. 2 — the “Distant Warning”. The BMD has also advised fishermen and trawler operators in the northern Bay of Bengal to refrain from entering the deep sea until further notice.
