Women’s participation in winter vegetable cultivation has been rising noticeably in Daria Nagar, a coastal area of Cox’s Bazar.

Using home courtyards, vacant plots, and nearby unused land, women are increasingly taking the initiative to grow vegetables on their own, boosting their household food supply while creating additional income opportunities.

Rashida Begum, a homemaker from Daria Nagar, said that winter vegetable farming helps meet her family’s daily needs. She also earns extra income by selling surplus produce at the local market.

“If land is left unused, it brings no benefit,” she said. “Now, by growing winter vegetables, we meet our family’s needs and also earn some money by selling the excess,” she added.

Local residents say such initiatives are helping coastal families become more financially self-reliant.

At the same time, women’s growing role in producing fresh and safe vegetables is making an essential contribution to local food security.

Officials from the local agriculture department said they are supporting this trend by providing training and advice on courtyard-based vegetable cultivation, encouraged by the strong interest shown by women.

As a result, the coastal stretch of Darya Nagar is now dotted with lush green vegetable gardens during the winter season—standing as a vivid example of women’s hard work, resilience, and growing self-sufficiency along the Cox’s Bazar coast.
