Moheshkhali-born footballer Monir Alam produced a moment of brilliance with a thunderous long-range strike from nearly 30 yards, handing Brothers Union a crucial victory in the Federation Cup.
The spectacular goal sparked wild celebrations, with Bangladesh national team captain Jamal Bhuyan among the first to embrace him.
The Group A match, held on Tuesday (December 9) at Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, saw Brothers Union edge past powerhouse Abahani to climb to the top of the group table.
Monir Alam scored the match’s only and decisive goal.
Although Abahani dominated possession early and kept Brothers Union under pressure, their attacking efforts failed to translate into goals.
Capitalising on a rare opening amid that pressure, Monir unleashed a fierce shot in the 27th minute.
The bullet-like effort from distance beat the Abahani goalkeeper despite his full-stretch dive, and it proved enough to secure all three points.
With one win and one draw from two matches, Brothers Union now sits atop the group.
Reflecting on his match-winning strike, Monir told Cox’s Bazar Life: “Winning always feels good, but it’s even more special when the team wins through your goal. Alhamdulillah. Please keep me in your prayers.”
A reliable defender, Monir Alam has impressed throughout the 2024–25 season with his composure, leadership, and resolute defending, earning praise from the club management.
Continuing that form, he will once again don the Brothers Union jersey alongside captain Jamal Bhuyan in the 2025–26 season.
