Cox’s Bazar successfully concluded a three-day Gender-Responsive Journalism Workshop for journalists. Jointly organized by UN Women and Deutsche Welle Akademie, the training brought together 12 male and female journalists from various print and multimedia media outlets of the district.
The workshop focused on key issues such as women’s empowerment, female leadership, the current status of women in society, the state, and the family, the causes of female dropout, and the role and position of women in journalism.
Participants also discussed journalists’ responsibilities in promoting women’s development through ethical, inclusive reporting.
Speakers at the workshop noted that although both government and non-government organizations are working separately on women’s development, women still lag in many areas.
Participants identified the social, cultural, and structural barriers behind this reality and engaged in group-based discussions to explore ways to overcome these challenges.
The training also emphasized the prevention of violence against women, the importance of increasing gender awareness, and the need for positive, responsible, and gender-sensitive representation of women in the media.
Organizers said that ensuring gender-responsive journalism in the media can help bring about positive social change by strengthening women’s rights, dignity, and equality.
They expressed hope that similar training programmes would continue, further enhancing journalists’ capacity for inclusive and responsible reporting.
