Rubel Hossain, a resident of Dakshin Mangla Para village, has been seen collecting native crabs along the seashore and riverbanks at Jadughar village near the Marine Drive Road in Cox’s Bazar.

Whenever he finds some free time from his regular work, Rubel heads to the riverbank to catch crabs. He said that crab collection helps meet his family’s food needs and, when there is surplus, provides an additional source of income through sales at the local market.

“Native crabs are very tasty and have high demand in the market,” Rubel said, adding that depending on size and quality, crabs can sell for between Tk 300 and Tk 500 per kilogram.

Local residents said that native crabs are more easily found along riverbanks and coastal areas during tidal movements. Many people in the area collect crabs in their spare time, earning some extra income alongside their regular livelihoods.

They noted that such small-scale use of coastal natural resources supports household nutrition and helps supply local markets, allowing people like Rubel Hossain to strengthen their livelihoods in modest yet meaningful ways.
