Demand for watermelon rises significantly during the holy month of Ramadan as many people prefer the juicy fruit at iftar and after breaking their fast to help restore hydration after a long day of fasting.

Capitalising on the seasonal demand, a lively pavement market has emerged in the Goongachtala area of Cox’s Bazar town. Every afternoon, vendors gather along the roadside with watermelons from different regions, attracting local residents and passersby who stop by to make purchases.

Traders said that depending on size and quality, watermelons are being sold for between Tk150 and Tk500 each. Prices typically range from Tk150 to Tk200 for smaller ones, while larger and better-quality fruits are sold for Tk300, Tk400, or even Tk500.

Vendors said buyers are showing strong interest as the watermelons are sweet and deep red inside.

Traders also noted that the market crowd has been growing steadily throughout Ramadan as demand for the refreshing fruit continues to rise.
